What most of us think of as a recession or depression is really just a collection of mis-steps. But before the economy sputtered out of the gate this downturn, Maya was making the headlines with names that reflect a shift in global culture.

We’re not talking about any one group of people: just the names themselves. This means: don’t just look for economic downturns to blame, look for what all of our choices have led to. What we have is a new, more inclusive, and less rigid set of cultural values, from our names to our dress sense to the ways we choose to express ourselves.

Maya the Mummy was a fun little story but even more so a great story about some of these more difficult changes to our language. The name of Maya the Mother and Maya the Mother 2 could symbolize an ideal of womanhood for us all. “She who created me for her would have me for she was greater than she is” was the statement of truth we all would know as Maya the Mother 2. But it wasn’t actually that simple.

We want to call this a global movement for empowerment in terms of identity. We also want to recognize the ways in which we have internalized sexism, rape culture, the idea that women are weaker and less capable than men, and how these are now being used against women. You know, that kind of stuff. Old blog: I am sure all of you already know that feminism is everywhere, and we should be aware our actions and beliefs are often based off of what feminists think.
