Creativity is the lifeblood of any artist. It’s at the core of what we do and creates new possibilities in front of us. Yet, it’s also a muscle that needs to be exercised in order to grow strong and maintain its energy. And we can exercise creativity through sports (word crush sports) like tennis, golf, painting…and so much more!

Here are 10 ways you can get creative by playing sports. Who knows? Maybe it’ll finally give you an idea for your next masterpiece or spur you on to create something completely unexpected!

#1 Tennis is great because –

rather than being limited to a canvas or a blank page – you get to use the entire world as your canvas, making the different elements of tennis (bouncing, rolling, flying) into opportunities for art. From taking shots to balancing on one leg – it forces us to think outside the box with every stride and shot taken.

#2 Golf is great because –

You have a greater degree of control over your art, leaving you free to be as creative as you like in how you represent yourself and the world around you. Not only does it require a good eye, but it also forces you to think about your swing, grip, and all the technical aspects of the game. It’s a great way to get outside into the sunlight (and fresh air) after a long day at work.

#3 Swimming is great because –

It’s a great way to combine both art and exercise into a single activity. Swimming is a great way to both relax and energize at the same time by taking in great breaths of air while moving your body through the water. It makes you feel weightless, light and free – like you’re floating in the air or able to move through it effortlessly. It encourages us to stretch and move in as many graceful ways as possible! 🙂

#4 Running is great because –

It’s a great way to clear your head and get away from whatever is bothering you. It can be a great way to get away from those negative thoughts by moving them through your muscles and lungs. It encourages us to think of new ways to move our bodies differently than just walking. You get to see the city and nature all at once…on two feet! It also helps with problem solving too! 🙂

#5 Hiking is great because –

It gets you up and moving through all kinds of different terrains (and makes you think about the journey ahead). It gets us moving outside and exploring nature. And if you’re feeling ambitious, you can even map out your own trails that you trek through.

#6 Painting is great because –

If you love seeing your work in the final product, then this is the sport for you! It’s a great way to get creative and create something from scratch that you can later hang on your wall. We paint for so many reasons (i.e. to stay inspired, to relax, to exercise our creativity). Painting takes the same approach in that you need physical movement to get your ideas flowing.

#7 Playing music is great because –

Whether you play an instrument or dance to it, music requires us to be in sync with our bodies, surroundings and the world. It’s a physical action that also helps us appreciate music better. Sure, we could jam out at home or on the computer with a keyboard/pad/laptop…but it’s also great to move around and play with friends!

#8 Dancing is great because –

It’s a fun way to get your creativity flowing…and you can do it by yourself too! #9 Working out is great because if you can’t make it to the gym, working out at home is an equally great way to keep in shape and exercise your creativity. Dancing can bring us emotional release so it’s important to allow yourself some room for letting go of your inhibitions when playing these sports. We need this too!

#9 Golf is great because –

It’s a long game of endurance and skill. You can also use teamwork to defeat your opponents! There are so many ways to get creative on the course. The way you hold your club, where you hit the ball, where you look when taking a shot…all of these little things can impact your score.

#10 Running is great because –

This is an exercise that everyone can enjoy and do anywhere! It’s super easy to do and doesn’t require any equipment. This helps us to not only increase our cardiovascular health but also improve our balance and coordination. And at the end of it all, we get a workout and a new perspective on life.

Conclusion:

Tennis, golf, swimming, running, hiking and playing music are some of my favorite sports to play. I like playing tennis because it’s a good form of exercise that also helps you to get smarter by challenging yourself mentally every time you’re on the court. So what sport do you like to play? Do you have any ideas for other sports that can help grow our creativity? Let me know 🙂
