Skytop Lodge is a legendary escape to the outdoors with one of America’s most unique lodging experiences, catering to those yearning for adventure in an expanse of wilderness. Residents who have been lucky enough to visit know this firsthand—the views from the lodge are breathtaking; all that’s necessary is a cup of cold coffee or tea and a good book to take in nature and be rewarded with beautiful thoughts. Underneath the majestic mountain peaks, however, there are also stories hidden in time. Skytop ice skating is one such account: a legend passed down from tourist to tourist—and we were lucky enough to hear the tale while staying at the lodge.

It’s said that in 1959, 30 years after Skytop was established, the ice skating rink in its basement was opened for business. The first year that it was set up, it drew in hundreds of skaters. The second year, it had even more visitors than its inaugural season. In the third year however—the third year that Skytop Lodge saw those beautiful mountains and peaks—there were no skaters on the ice rink.
