What is Economics Nobelist Robert?
Economics Nobelist Robert was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1995 along with William Vickrey, Jr. for analysis of effective rates of return in an economy. He is a professor at the University of Chicago and served as Chairman of that university’s economics department until 2003, when he left for Texas A&M University. After leaving Chicago, Lucas became known as a supporter of free market policies and a critic of government policies such as labor unions (which he argues often act like “cartels”). He is against minimum wage laws and believes that unions work to restrict growth during their existence.
In a 1990 interview with National Review, he said: “I am a strong opponent of labor unions. … I’m an ardent supporter of the right to work.” He went on to say that “You have a thousand dollar bill lying on the table; the guy in front of you claims that you can’t use it because it’s his. I don’t believe it. I would say no to him if he started screaming at me.” In 2009, Lucas was a co-chair of the Economics Nobel committee with two other economists who awarded the prize to Daniel Kahneman and Alvin E. Roth for their theories on judgment and choice under uncertainty. He has also been a member of the Econometric Society since 1970, and was formerly a Distinguished Research Fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution.
Facts:
In 2001 Lucas was quoted as saying, “The benefit of immigration is not the number of people who come in but the quality of the folks who come in.” He has also said that he thinks that immigration is good because it allows us to “get rid of stupid, ignorant foreigners.” In his famous speech in 2003 he said: “But here’s another paradox: We know that we cannot trust people who have power–and yet we give them more power. … If we create new programs for job training, we create more bureaucracy.
