Scotch is one of the first drinks made with real alcohol. It’s been made from water since about the mid-17th century. The process of distilling alcohol became difficult after the production of grain alcohol in the latter part of the 17th century. The solution to making alcohol out of grain was simple. Instead of letting the grain ferment, a still was created and the distillate was the residual mash.
There are a plethora of methods for creating whisky, from the production of single malts and single varietals to single malts mixed with other components (from fruit to herbs and spices). Whiskey can be made at home or by skilled producers. Distills are available in many variations and, of course, there are the varieties produced only by the producers. It takes years to find the right balance of flavour or balance between alcohol volume and alcohol intensity.
So it’s been a long while since I have been to Scotland but my friend had a chance to visit in March and I had the privilege to visit her home country in Scotland in July.
