It is no secret that men are often punished for deviating from the norm. A man who does not hold a traditional job might be looked down upon by society, even if he is an excellent father. A man who decides to leave his wife and children behind in favor of starting a new family with someone else will be called selfish, regardless of the circumstances. What this blog post seeks to do is explore why there are so many male-specific gender norms that exist, both historically and currently. The first gender norms as we know them today were established back in the 18th century. At this time, men were expected to be leaders of their households and breadwinners for their families. Women would stay at home and take care of the children while they supported the family financially. The male-centric society that emerged was seen as a logical extension from traditional roles during medieval times when women had limited power outside of domestic life – raised by some feminists as an argument against patriarchy theory because it is historically inaccurate. What happened over subsequent centuries was not just changes in perception but also changes in laws with regards to marriage, property ownership, divorce proceedings etc., which all reinforced these traditional gender roles.” ** ** ** **
