I am not a Chicago native, but I’ve been reading up on the state’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and it seems that the state government is taking it seriously. They have imposed a moratorium on non-essential activities. This means restaurants and bars, theaters and events, and schools aren’t allowed to reopen. As a Chicago native, I am not surprised by this. I’m still trying to figure out what is going on and why.
The state government doesn’t seem to be trying to lock down the entire city, just the downtown area. This is because Chicago is a very diverse city with large ethnic communities. They’ve not locked down neighborhoods that are majority-black, and they’ve also not locked down the neighborhoods with the highest concentration of white residents, like my neighborhood of Lakeview.
