The Conjuring follows the Perrons, a family who move into a newly constructed farmhouse, only to be terrorized by an unseen force.

Widely considered as one of the best horror films ever made, The Exorcist is based on a book of the same name and follows a family who asks for help from two priests, who are struggling against their own personal demons, to save their daughter after she becomes possessed by an evil demon.
This film has an amazing 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and managed to win Best Adapted Screenplay at the 1975 Oscars.
6. Carrie
Screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen’s mesmerizing adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel is a remake of the 1973 film, and stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, who goes on a murderous rampage after her cruel high school bullies take out their frustrations on her.
The film also stars Piper Laurie who plays Carrie’s mother, and Brian Cox as the monster-obsessed father of the two bullies.
This has an amazing 92% rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics and managed to win both Best Adapted Screenplay at the 1976 Oscars as well as Best Actress at the 1976 Oscars for Spacek.
7. The Fly
The Fly is one of the most visually disturbing films of all time. In this film, a scientist’s attempt to combine human and insect DNA goes horribly wrong. Directed by David Cronenberg, the film stars Jeff Goldblum as a brilliant scientist who slowly changes into a creature with many of the characteristics of both man and fly, and his love interest Geena Davis. The Fly has an amazing 92% rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics and won Best Make-up at the 1986 Oscars.

Poltergeist is a horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Steven Spielberg. Poltergeist follows a family whose home is haunted by evil spirits that abducts the youngest daughter of the family in the middle of the night.

9. The Silence of the Lambs
The Silence of the Lambs is one of my personal favorite horror movies, and it’s not just because Jodie Foster won her first Oscar for this one (although she did give a great performance).
This movie tells the story of a young FBI trainee named Clarice Starling who must track down a serial killer known as Buffalo Bill, and help him into bringing him to justice.
The film is based on the story by Thomas Harris and is the first installment in his Hannibal Lecter series. The Silence of the Lambs has an amazing 91% rating from Rotten Tomatoes users.
10. Saw
This movie introduced many horror movies, including Jigsaw’s Traps and Fake-out Traps, which allows for you to “win” by surviving, but not always in a way you might be expecting. This movie also introduces us to Jigsaw’s psycho puppet master, Mark Hoffman, played by Cary Elwes.
